I’ve lived in Woodforest for almost five and a half years, and I still love driving in under the trees at the end of the day. When we moved here, we were ready to leave Harris County behind for Montgomery County, and it’s a decision we’ve never regretted.
As a Realtor, I can tell you about square footage and HOA dues. But as a neighbor, I can tell you what it’s actually like to live here. So here’s my insider’s guide to Woodforest: what we love, what’s worth knowing, and who I think it’s a great fit for.
Where Woodforest Is
Woodforest is a 3,000-acre master-planned community by Johnson Development in south Montgomery County. It sits about six miles south of Lake Conroe and five miles north of The Woodlands. That means you’re close to the lake, close to everything The Woodlands offers, and still tucked away in the trees.
The Trees and Trails
The first thing people notice is the trees, and honestly, they’re my favorite part too. Woodforest was designed around its forest, not cleared for it. The HOA keeps the grounds beautifully maintained, so every drive and walk feels cared for.
Walking trails wind all through the neighborhood, connecting parks, ponds, and green space. Most evenings you’ll find neighbors out walking dogs, pushing strollers, or just enjoying the shade.
Pools, Courts, and Plenty to Do
We play pickleball and tennis, and there are plenty of courts to choose from. There are also multiple pools, so you’re never fighting for a spot on a summer afternoon.
Highlights include:
- Forest Island Recreation Center: a freeform pool, water slides, tennis courts, and basketball courts
- The Palm: another amenity center with its own pool
- Lily Pad Splash Park: a favorite with families and grandkids
- Dog park, sports courts, playgrounds, and stocked ponds spread throughout the community
- Woodforest Golf Club: a private 27-hole championship course designed by PGA veteran Steve Elkington. We don’t golf ourselves, but plenty of neighbors do.
Pine Market: Woodforest’s Main Street
Pine Market is the community’s town center, anchored by Harvest Market grocery. You’ll find restaurants, salons, a pharmacy, medical offices, and everyday conveniences, all without leaving the neighborhood.
It’s also where community life happens. The HOA hosts summer concerts and events in the play area at Pine Market, and there are holiday events throughout the season. Whatever your style, there’s usually something on the calendar.
Schools
Woodforest is split between two school districts: Conroe ISD and Montgomery ISD. Which one serves a home depends on its section of the neighborhood. Stewart Elementary (Conroe ISD) sits right inside the community.
My kids were grown by the time we moved here, but I hear great things from neighbors with school-age children. If schools are a priority for you, I always recommend confirming zoning for the specific address before you buy. I’m happy to help with that.
Bonterra: Woodforest’s 55+ Community
Tucked inside Woodforest is Bonterra, an active-adult community for ages 55 and up, built by Taylor Morrison. Residents love it, and it’s beautiful.
Bonterra has its own 10,000-square-foot clubhouse, a resort-style pool and hot tub, a fitness room, and pickleball and bocce courts. Residents also get full access to all of Woodforest’s amenities. If you’re downsizing or looking for a lower-maintenance lifestyle with built-in community, it’s worth a look.
A Few Things to Know Before You Buy
- Home styles and price points vary widely. You’ll find townhomes, single-family homes from many builders, and custom homes in gated Pine Island on lots up to 1.5 acres. Lot widths vary by section, too, so if yard space matters to you, the section you choose makes a difference.
- HOA dues and MUD taxes vary by section. Woodforest homes sit in different Municipal Utility Districts, so tax rates differ. Bonterra also has its own HOA, with dues that differ from the rest of Woodforest. I’ll walk you through the real numbers for any home you’re considering.
- Some sections are still growing. New construction continues in parts of the community, which means more choices but also some building activity nearby.
